द ओवल की हरी पिच पर इंग्लैंड के कार्यवाहक कप्तान जो रूट ने टॉस जीतकर पहले गेंदबाजी चुनी। दिन के अंत तक न्यूजीलैंड ने 7 विकेट पर 291 रन बना लिए। ग्लेन फिलिप्स 49 रन बनाकर नाबाद रहे और टीम को मजबूत स्थिति में पहुंचाया।
