जब भारत शनिवार को अफ़गानिस्तान के ख़िलाफ़ तीन मैचों की घरेलू सीरीज़ के साथ 2027 वनडे वर्ल्ड कप की तैयारी शुरू करेगा, तो ज़ाहिर है कि सबकी नज़रें विराट कोहली, रोहित शर्मा और कप्तान शुभमन गिल की अगुआई में टीम की भविष्य की योजनाओं पर होंगी। लेकिन भारत के पूर्व बल्लेबाज़ सुरेश रैना का मानना है कि यह सीरीज़ अगले साल होने वाले टूर्नामेंट से पहले भारत की एक बड़ी चिंता को दूर करने का भी सही मौका है: हार्दिक पांड्या के लिए एक भरोसेमंद बैकअप खिलाड़ी ढूंढना।
JioStar के शो 'फॉलो द ब्लूज़' पर बात करते हुए, रैना ने टीम मैनेजमेंट से कहा कि वे चोट-प्रोन ऑलराउंडर का विकल्प तैयार करने को प्राथमिकता दें। यह खिलाड़ी बेंगलुरु में BCCI के सेंटर ऑफ़ एक्सीलेंस में ट्रेनिंग के दौरान पैर में खिंचाव के कारण अफ़गानिस्तान सीरीज़ से बाहर हो गया है। रैना ने कहा कि हार्दिक पांड्या को कई बार चोटों का सामना करना पड़ा है, जो चिंता की बात है। अगले वनडे वर्ल्ड कप तक, भारत के पास उनके लिए एक भरोसेमंद बैकअप होना चाहिए।
यह एक ऐसी चिंता है जो सालों से भारत के साथ बनी हुई है। हार्दिक ही एकमात्र ऐसे असली तेज़-गेंदबाज़ ऑलराउंडर हैं जो वनडे टीम को संतुलन दे सकते हैं। हालाँकि, बार-बार होने वाली फ़िटनेस की समस्याओं के कारण उनकी उपलब्धता पर असर पड़ता रहा है, जिससे उनकी गैर-मौजूदगी में भारत कमज़ोर पड़ जाता है। उस निर्भरता का असर 2023 वनडे वर्ल्ड कप के दौरान साफ़ दिखा। टूर्नामेंट के बीच में हार्दिक के चोटिल होने के बाद, भारत को उनकी जगह किसी ऐसे खिलाड़ी को लाने में मुश्किल हुई जो टीम को वैसा ही बैलेंस दे सके; और आखिर में टीम बिना छठे बॉलिंग ऑप्शन के ही फ़ाइनल में उतरी।
अफ़गानिस्तान सीरीज़ के साथ ही भारत की वर्ल्ड कप की तैयारी शुरू हो रही है, ऐसे में मैनेजमेंट के पास दूसरे विकल्पों को आज़माने का यह एक बेहतरीन मौका हो सकता है। रैना का मानना है कि नीतीश कुमार रेड्डी, जिन्हें वनडे स्क्वाड में शामिल किया गया है, इस भूमिका के लिए एक मज़बूत दावेदार साबित हो सकते हैं।
