Amid scorching heat and humidity, homes are being forced into darkness, businesses are struggling, and public anger is reportedly reaching power stations. To conserve electricity, the government has ordered shops and shopping malls to close by 8 PM, while restrictions have also been placed on decorative lighting and illuminated billboards. The crisis has been worsened by LNG supply disruptions and fuel shortages, with power generation reportedly falling by around 1,500 MW. The impact is being felt across agriculture, shrimp farming, textiles, garments and small businesses. But the biggest twist in the story involves India. Despite growing political tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka, Bangladesh has now requested additional diesel supplies from India to deal with the immediate energy crisis. The two countries already have the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, which has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh since 2017. So, why is Bangladesh turning to India for fuel amid a deepening energy crisis?
