Was 'Cornell 7' case reopened due to online outrage? | Top Comment Podcast
An alleged case of gang rape at a Cornell frat house has caused widespread outrage after new details emerged in a civil suit brought by the purported victim. Evidence including a Snapchat screenshot advertising a "free" sexual encounter has seen anger online directed not only towards those men accused of being involved, but others who apparently failed to step in. As a criminal investigation is reopened, Marianna and Matt explain how this case has taken over social media, from scathing critiques of campus culture and opaque accountability measures, to doxxing, misidentification and censorship. The university's leadership has denied its response was inadequate. Also this week, we discuss arguably the most viral story of the year - the fallout at a covid-conscious lesbian bar in western Massachusetts. After the struggling Last Ditch decided to suspend their mask mandate on Saturday nights, they were met with a torrent of abuse calling them ableist and even eugenicist. Top Comment takes you through the chaotic conversations which followed, and we consider whether AOC spoke too soon when she famously closed the book on Woke 1.0 identity politics. Iranian men charged with terror plot to target UK Jewish community | BBC News
Two Iranian men have been charged with terror offences over an alleged plot to target the UK’s Jewish community in the city of Manchester ahead of Yom Kippur, counter-terrorism police have said. Rahman Salehi, 35, of Salford and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, from Liverpool, who are thought to have arrived in the UK by small boat, are accused of preparing to commit an act of terrorism or assisting another to commit an act of terrorism on or before 20 September. The pair who were arrested in the city are accused of communicating with others, to acquire components to assemble a homemade explosive device. It’s alleged they had obtained instructions on manufacturing bombs, had been using the internet to identify potential targets and conducted reconnaissance of potential locations for attack. The British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the news two Iranian men have been charged over an alleged plot would be "deeply distressing" to the Jewish community. She said: "The fact both suspects arrived by small boat several years ago is a reminder of the importance of our relentless work to tackle illegal migration into this country. While numbers are down, I know there is more we must do” Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lucy Manning.
