आयुष बडोनी को भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम में पहली बार मौका मिला है क्योंकि ऑलराउंडर गेंदबाज वाशिंगटन सुंदर चोट के कारण भारत बनाम न्यूजीलैंड वनडे सीरीज से बाहर हो गए हैं। भारतीय क्रिकेट कंट्रोल बोर्ड (बीसीसीआई) ने एक मीडिया विज्ञप्ति में बताया कि रविवार को वडोदरा के कोटंबी स्थित बीसीए स्टेडियम में न्यूजीलैंड के खिलाफ तीन मैचों की सीरीज के पहले वनडे के दौरान गेंदबाजी करते समय वाशिंगटन सुंदर को अपनी बाईं पसली के निचले हिस्से में तेज दर्द महसूस हुआ।
सूचना में कहा गया है कि वाशिंगटन का आगे स्कैन किया जाएगा, जिसके बाद बीसीसीआई की मेडिकल टीम विशेषज्ञ की राय लेगी। वाशिंगटन सुंदर की जगह पुरुष चयन समिति ने आयुष बडोनी को टीम में शामिल किया है, जो राजकोट में भारतीय टीम से जुड़ेंगे, जहां भारत बनाम न्यूजीलैंड का दूसरा वनडे खेला जाएगा। दाएं हाथ के बल्लेबाज बडोनी दाएं हाथ से ऑफ-स्पिन गेंदबाजी भी करते हैं। दूसरे और तीसरे वनडे के लिए भारत की अपडेटेड टीम: शुभमन गिल (कप्तान), रोहित शर्मा, विराट कोहली, केएल राहुल (विकेटकीपर), श्रेयस अय्यर (उप-कप्तान), रविंद्र जडेजा, मोहम्मद सिराज, हर्षित राणा, प्रसिद्ध कृष्णा, कुलदीप यादव, नीतीश कुमार रेड्डी, अर्शदीप सिंह, यशस्वी जायसवाल, ध्रुव जुरेल (विकेटकीपर), आयुष बडोनी।
वाशिंगटन सुंदर ने न्यूजीलैंड के खिलाफ सीरीज के पहले मैच में सिर्फ पांच ओवर फेंके और 25 रन दिए, पहली पारी में उन्हें कोई विकेट नहीं मिला। 26 वर्षीय सुंदर न्यूजीलैंड की पारी के बीच में ही मैदान से बाहर चले गए और वापस नहीं लौटे। हालांकि, बाद में वे नंबर 8 पर बल्लेबाजी करने आए और न्यूजीलैंड के खिलाफ भारतीय टीम की चार विकेट की जीत में सात रन बनाए। मैच के बाद, भारतीय कप्तान शुभमन गिल ने पुष्टि की कि वाशिंगटन सुंदर को साइड स्ट्रेन हुआ है और उनका स्कैन किया जाएगा।
