पिछले कुछ महीनों में शानदार प्रदर्शन के चलते संजू सैमसन भारतीय पुरुष क्रिकेट टीम की कप्तानी संभालने के प्रबल दावेदार के रूप में उभरे हैं। जागरण की एक रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, अजीत अगरकर की अध्यक्षता वाली भारतीय क्रिकेट कंट्रोल बोर्ड (बीसीसीआई) की चयन समिति सैमसन की निरंतरता, धैर्य और टी20 अंतरराष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट में नेतृत्व क्षमता से बेहद प्रभावित है। संजू सैमसन ने आईसीसी पुरुष टी20 विश्व कप में भारत की जीत में अहम भूमिका निभाई और शुरुआती मैचों में न खेलने के बावजूद उन्हें प्लेयर ऑफ द टूर्नामेंट का पुरस्कार मिला।
गौतम गंभीर की अगुवाई वाली टीम प्रबंधन ने शुरुआत में अभिषेक शर्मा और ईशान किशन को प्राथमिकता दी थी, इसलिए विकेटकीपर-बल्लेबाज सैमसन को नजरअंदाज कर दिया गया था। हालांकि, प्लेइंग इलेवन में वापसी के बाद, सैमसन ने दबाव में रहते हुए वेस्ट इंडीज के खिलाफ करो या मरो के मुकाबले में नाबाद 97 रनों की मैच-विनिंग पारी खेली। इसके बाद उन्होंने नॉकआउट चरण में इंग्लैंड और न्यूजीलैंड दोनों के खिलाफ 89 रनों की महत्वपूर्ण पारियां खेलीं।
