The new auxiliary bishop of Mainz, Fr. Joshy, was born in Kerala, India. His appointment reflects the rising number of foreign‑born Catholics in Germany, with Mainz having one of the highest proportions. Indian Catholics have been present in Germany since the 1960s and 1970s, when health‑care workers from Kerala arrived, followed later by Indian priests filling clergy shortages. Born in 1977, Fr. Joshy lost both parents early in life and joined the Carmelite formation in 1992. The Carmelite order in Kerala has long‑standing ties with Germany.
