Sugar prices are rising sharply across India just ahead of the festive season, raising concerns about the cost of sweets during Dussehra and Diwali. In Uttar Pradesh, ex-mill sugar prices have surged by around 13% to ₹5,200 per quintal, while Maharashtra has witnessed an increase of nearly 17%. Retail sugar prices in Delhi, Lucknow and Patna are reportedly ranging between ₹52 and ₹58 per kilogram. Why are sugar prices rising despite government measures? To ease supply pressure, the Centre has allowed duty-free imports of 1 million tonnes of raw sugar and introduced stock limits. Meanwhile, sugarcane farmers are demanding an increase in the minimum selling price of sugar from ₹31 to ₹50 per kilogram.
