IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode’s death has raised serious questions about student pressure, alleged caste discrimination, disciplinary action and mental health support within India’s premier institutions. In this episode of The Big Picture, we examine the events surrounding Sahil’s death, the allegations made by his family, IIT Bombay’s response, the ongoing investigation and the questions raised by students on campus. We also look at RTI-based data showing 65 reported student suicides across IIT campuses between January 2021 and December 2025, including 54 male students. The investigation into Sahil’s death is ongoing, and the allegations have not been established as fact.
