Gulzar’s family has now alleged that the state government and local police forced his last rites without their consent, leading to widespread outrage across Punjab. Gulzar Singh’s family has declared they will not hold the customary Bhog ceremony until justice is served and strict action is taken against those named in Gulzar's final video. Gulzar Singh had publicly questioned Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema about the rising drug menace affecting his family and village. Thereafter, he was harassed and asked to apologise, following which he committed suicide.
