The court held that an unaided private school can enforce a uniform dress code equally for all students, provided it is non-discriminatory. The bench observed that allowing individual additions to a prescribed uniform could undermine the purpose of uniformity and discipline. The court also said that previous tolerance of the headscarf did not create a legal right to continue wearing it. The student had invoked religious freedom, privacy, personal liberty and freedom of expression, but the court found insufficient evidence to establish that wearing a headscarf at school was an essential religious practice.
