The town's railway network connected major cities and regions across Central Europe, including routes linking Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Warsaw, and the industrial areas of Silesia. This extensive rail infrastructure made it an ideal site for the deportation of prisoners from across Nazi-occupied Europe. Following the implementation of the Nazi regime's plans for the mass murder of European Jews, and in the context of decisions formalized at the Wannsee Conference in January 1942, Auschwitz was expanded into the largest center of extermination and forced labor in the Nazi camp system. Auschwitz was established after earlier concentration camps such as Dachau, Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, Flossenbürg, Mauthausen, and Ravensbrück.
