रॉयल चैलेंजर्स बेंगलुरु को लगातार दो आईपीएल खिताब दिलाने के बावजूद, रजत पाटीदार को आयरलैंड और इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ आगामी टी20 अंतरराष्ट्रीय सीरीज के लिए भारतीय टीम में जगह नहीं मिली। उन्हें एशियाई खेलों के लिए भी टीम में नहीं चुना गया। उनकी इस अनदेखी ने और भी ध्यान खींचा क्योंकि चयनकर्ताओं ने कई साहसिक फैसले लिए, जिनमें श्रेयस अय्यर को नया टी20 अंतरराष्ट्रीय कप्तान बनाना शामिल है। सूर्यकुमार यादव, जिन्होंने पहले टीम की कप्तानी की थी, को आईपीएल सीजन में निराशाजनक प्रदर्शन के बाद टीम से बाहर कर दिया गया।
भारतीय टीम में भविष्य पर भी ध्यान केंद्रित किया गया है। 15 वर्षीय वैभव सूर्यवंशी को पहली बार अंतरराष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट में शामिल किया गया है, क्योंकि आने वाले वर्षों में लॉस एंजिल्स ओलंपिक और 2028 टी20 विश्व कप सहित प्रमुख टूर्नामेंटों की तैयारी शुरू हो गई है। तिलक वर्मा को उप-कप्तान नियुक्त किया गया है, जबकि नीतीश कुमार रेड्डी, रवि बिश्नोई और प्रिंस यादव को भी टीम में जगह मिली है।
इस बीच, ऐसा माना जा रहा है कि पाटीदार को 15 सदस्यीय टीम में जगह नहीं मिली क्योंकि टीम प्रबंधन को उनके बल्ले से प्रदर्शन पर पूरा भरोसा नहीं था। श्रेयस के अब चौथे नंबर पर बल्लेबाजी करने के कारण उनके लिए भी टीम में जगह नहीं थी। मुख्य चयनकर्ता अजीत अगरकर ने भी कई खिलाड़ियों के अपने मौके का इंतजार करने की चुनौती को स्वीकार करते हुए कहा कि फिलहाल टीम में उतने ही प्रतिभाशाली क्रिकेटर मौजूद हैं।
प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस में अगरकर ने कहा कि हम कई खिलाड़ियों पर चर्चा करते हैं। आप यूं ही बैठकर 15 नामों की सूची नहीं बना देते। भारत में बहुत अच्छे खिलाड़ी हैं। अगर आपने आईपीएल देखा है या घरेलू क्रिकेट को फॉलो किया है, तो आपको कई ऐसे खिलाड़ी दिखेंगे जो टीम में शामिल होने के काबिल हैं। लेकिन टीम में पहले से मौजूद खिलाड़ी भी अच्छा प्रदर्शन कर रहे हैं। हमने कुछ समय पहले ही विश्व कप जीता है। हमें लगता है कि हमने एक बहुत अच्छी टीम चुनी है। कुछ खिलाड़ी टीम में जगह नहीं बना पाएंगे, लेकिन आप सिर्फ 15 खिलाड़ियों को ही चुन सकते हैं और हम इस टीम से बहुत खुश हैं।
