The attack occurred while the young man was arranging his mother-in-law's funeral pyre. Suddenly, a crocodile—lying in ambush in the river—dragged him into the water. The individual seen in the photograph is Deepak, the very young man who had traveled from Greater Noida to Gonda to attend his mother-in-law's funeral. It is reported that while he was arranging the pyre, he went to the river to wash his hands, at which point the crocodile launched its attack. The crocodile clamped its jaws around Deepak's head and swiftly dragged him beneath the water.
