पूर्व मुख्य कोच रवि शास्त्री का कहना है कि भारत को टी20 विश्व कप का खिताब दिलाने में अहम भूमिका निभाने वाले स्टार खिलाड़ी संजू सैमसन अगले दो-तीन साल में क्रिकेट के सबसे छोटे प्रारूप में राष्ट्रीय टीम की कप्तानी के लिए एक मजबूत दावेदार होंगे।
सूर्यकुमार यादव की अगुआई में भारतीय टीम ने दो महीने पहले घरेलू मैदान पर आईसीसी पुरुष टी20 विश्व कप का खिताब जीता था जिसमें 31 वर्षीय सैमसन को ‘प्लेयर ऑफ द टूर्नामेंट’ चुना गया था।
शास्त्री ने कहा कि जब 2028 में अगला टी20 विश्व कप आएगा तब तक भारत को शायद सूर्यकुमार की जगह लेने के लिए किसी को ढूंढना पड़ सकता है क्योंकि उस समय मौजूदा कप्तान 37 साल के हो चुके होंगे।
‘द आईसीसी रिव्यू’ के अनुसार शास्त्री ने कहा, ‘‘जब 2028 में अगला टी20 विश्व कप खेला जाएगा, तब तक भारत शायद एक नए कप्तान की तलाश में हो सकता है। यह इस बात पर निर्भर करेगा कि अगले कुछ साल में सूर्यकुमार का प्रदर्शन कैसा रहता है। ’’
भारत के इस पूर्व आल राउंडर ने कहा, ‘‘लेकिन संजू सैमसन ने खुद को कप्तानी की भूमिका के लिए एक मजबूत दावेदार के तौर पर पेश किया है क्योंकि उन्होंने बीते समय में राजस्थान रॉयल्स के लिए यह भूमिका निभाई है। ’’
सैमसन ने आईपीएल में पांच साल तक राजस्थान रॉयल्स की कप्तानी की है जिसमें 2022 का सत्र भी शामिल है जिसमें टीम उपविजेता रही थी।
अंतरराष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट में सैमसन अपने करियर की सर्वश्रेष्ठ फॉर्म में चल रहे हैं। 31 वर्षीय इस खिलाड़ी ने भारत के टी20 विश्व कप अभियान के दौरान लगातार तीन अर्धशतक जड़े थे।
शास्त्री ने कहा, ‘‘लेकिन इस सत्र में उसने जिस तरह का खेल दिखाया है, वह शानदार रहा हैं। विशेषकर टी20 विश्व कप में उन्होंने अकेले दम पर भारत को कई बड़े मैच क्वार्टर-फाइनल (वेस्टइंडीज, सुपर आठ), सेमीफाइनल और फाइनल जिताए। जिस तरह से उन्होंने जिम्मेदारी संभाली और जिस परिपक्वता का प्रदर्शन वह अब आईपीएल में कर रहे हैं, उसे देखते हुए मेरी नजर में वह भविष्य में कप्तानी के लिए एक बेहद मजबूत और स्पष्ट दावेदार हैं। ’’
शास्त्री ने यह भी कहा कि सैमसन की निरंतरता को लेकर उठने वाले सवाल अब अतीत की बात हो गए हैं।
उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘मुझे लगता है कि सैमसन ने उन सभी सवालों पर विराम लगा दिया है। उसमें काबिलियत तो हमेशा से थी, बल्कि लोग इसलिए निराश होते थे क्योंकि वह अपनी उस काबिलियत के साथ न्याय नहीं कर पाता था।
