लखनऊ सुपर जायंट्स (एलएसजी) के मुख्य कोच जस्टिन लैंगर ने आईपीएल मैच के सुपर ओवर में कोलकाता नाइट राइडर्स (केकेआर) के स्टार स्पिनर सुनील नारायण का सामना करने के लिए निकोलस पूरन को भेजने के फैसले का बचाव करते हुए कहा कि टीम प्रबंधन ने खराब फॉर्म में होने के बावजूद वेस्टइंडीज के इस विस्फोटक बल्लेबाज को सबसे अच्छा विकल्प माना।
पूरन इस सत्र में रन बनाने के लिए जूझ रहे हैं और उनका उच्चतम स्कोर 22 रन रहा है।
वह सुपर ओवर में नारायण की पहली गेंद पर आउट हो गए। एलएसजी ने सुपर ओवर में केवल एक रन बनाया। केकेआर ने केवल एक गेंद पर जीत हासिल कर ली।
लैंगर से जब मैच के बाद प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस में इस संबंध में सवाल पूछा गया तो उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘अच्छा सवाल है। हमें पता था कि सुनील नारायण गेंदबाजी करेंगे और अगर आप निकी (निकोलस पूरन) का रिकॉर्ड देखें, तो वह सुनील नारायण को क्रिकेट जगत में किसी भी अन्य बल्लेबाज की तुलना में अधिक बेहतर समझते हैं। इसलिए हमें लगा कि वही सबसे अच्छा विकल्प हैं।’’
उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘मुझे पता है कि उन्होंने अभी तक अपनी फॉर्म हासिल नहीं की है और निकी खुद भी यह बात मानेंगे, लेकिन हमने सोचा था कि अगर कोई सुपर ओवर में अच्छा प्रदर्शन कर सकता है, तो वह निकी पूरन ही हैं। आप अपने सर्वश्रेष्ठ खिलाड़ियों पर ही भरोसा करते हैं। अगर आप सभी आंकड़ों को देखें तो नारायण को निकी से बेहतर कोई नहीं खेलता। दुर्भाग्य से इस बार ऐसा नहीं हो पाया।’’
नारायण ने इससे पहले टी20 क्रिकेट में जो पहला सुपर ओवर (2014 में कैरेबियाई प्रीमियर लीग में) किया था, उस समय भी पूरन बिना रन बनाए आउट हो गए थे।
लैंगर ने कहा, ‘‘पिछले कुछ वर्षों में शायद ही कोई पूरन से बेहतर टी20 खिलाड़ी विश्व में हो। इससे पता चलता है कि वह भी इंसान हैं। आत्मविश्वास का दिखावा नहीं किया जा सकता। हम सभी कोशिश करते हैं। आप आत्मविश्वास से भरे दिख सकते हैं, लेकिन आत्मविश्वास सही प्रक्रियाओं को अपनाने से आता है।’’
एलएसजी के कप्तान ऋषभ पंत ने भी सुपर ओवर में पूरन को बल्लेबाजी के लिए चुनने के फैसले का बचाव किया था।
पंत ने मैच के बाद पुरस्कार वितरण समारोह में कहा था, ‘‘हमने सुपर ओवर के बल्लेबाजों को लेकर चर्चा की और तब निकोलस पूरन का नाम सामने आया। हो सकता है कि वह अपने करियर के सर्वश्रेष्ठ फॉर्म में न हों, लेकिन ऐसी मुश्किल परिस्थिति में आप अपने मंझे हुए खिलाड़ी पर भरोसा करेंगे।’’
लैंगर ने स्वीकार किया कि उनकी टीम काली मिट्टी की पिच के अनुरूप खुद को ढाल नहीं पाई।
उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘यह निराशाजनक है। पिछले मैच के बाद मैंने कहा था कि मुझे लाल मिट्टी वाला विकेट बहुत अच्छा लगा था। उसमें तेजी और उछाल थी। क्रिकेट के लिए यह वाकई रोमांचक होता है। आज हम काली मिट्टी की पिच के अनुकूल नहीं ढल पाए। यह पिच धीमी थी और उस पर गेंद नीची रह रही थी।’’
इस बीच केकेआर के तेज गेंदबाज वैभव अरोड़ा ने टीम के चुनौतीपूर्ण स्कोर का श्रेय रिंकू सिंह की अंतिम ओवरों में की गई तूफानी बल्लेबाजी को दिया। उन्होंने पारी के अंतिम ओवर में दिग्वेश राठी पर लगातार चार छक्के लगाए थे।
अरोड़ा ने कहा, ‘‘रिंकू की पारी की वजह से ही हम जीते। अगर उन्होंने वह पारी नहीं खेली होती तो हम अच्छे स्कोर तक नहीं पहुंच पाते। इस पिच पर 155 का स्कोर अच्छा था।
