राजकोट के निरंजन शाह स्टेडियम में खचाखच भरे स्टेडियम में न्यूजीलैंड के खिलाफ दूसरे वनडे में रोहित शर्मा और विराट कोहली के शानदार प्रदर्शन की उम्मीद थी। हालांकि, केएल राहुल ने बल्ले से सारी सुर्खियां बटोर लीं। विकेटकीपर-बल्लेबाज राहुल ने मेजबान टीम के लिए तब मोर्चा संभाला जब दोनों दिग्गज बल्लेबाज अपनी अच्छी शुरुआत को बड़े स्कोर में तब्दील नहीं कर पाए। दरअसल, राहुल ने वनडे में अपना आठवां शतक तब बनाया जब शुभमन गिल के अलावा लगभग कोई भी भारतीय बल्लेबाज 30 रन का आंकड़ा पार नहीं कर सका।
इस शतक के साथ ही राहुल ने पूर्व भारतीय कप्तान मोहम्मद अजहरुद्दीन के 50 ओवर के फॉर्मेट में शतकों के रिकॉर्ड को भी पीछे छोड़ दिया। अजहरुद्दीन अपने 334 वनडे मैचों के करियर में सिर्फ सात शतक ही बना पाए थे। वहीं राहुल ने अपने करियर के सिर्फ 93वें वनडे में ही यह कारनामा कर दिखाया और टीम के मुश्किल समय में टीम को संभाला। वह इस मैदान पर वनडे में शतक बनाने वाले पहले भारतीय खिलाड़ी भी बन गए। उन्होंने शिखर धवन का रिकॉर्ड तोड़ दिया, जो इससे पहले 90 रन पर आउट हुए थे।
राहुल की शानदार पारी की बदौलत भारत ने 50 ओवरों में सात विकेट के नुकसान पर 284 रन बनाए। राहुल ने मात्र 92 गेंदों पर 112 रन बनाकर नाबाद पारी खेली। पारी के 22वें ओवर में बल्लेबाजी करने आए राहुल ने क्रीज पर रहते हुए 11 चौके और एक छक्का लगाया। बीच के ओवरों में पिच के थोड़ा टर्न लेने से केएल राहुल के लिए क्रीज पर शुरुआत आसान नहीं रही। विराट कोहली भी बल्लेबाजी करने आए और जल्द ही 23 रन बनाकर आउट हो गए। हालांकि, राहुल ने हार नहीं मानी और अपनी पारी को शानदार ढंग से आगे बढ़ाया। उन्होंने रवींद्र जडेजा के साथ पांचवें विकेट के लिए 73 रनों की साझेदारी करके पारी को संभाला और फिर डेथ ओवरों में न्यूजीलैंड के गेंदबाजों पर जमकर हमला बोला।
टीम इंडिया के संकटमोचक केएल राहुल ने यह सुनिश्चित किया कि भारत एक सम्मानजनक स्कोर खड़ा कर सके, जो एक समय न्यूजीलैंड की गेंदबाजी को देखते हुए बेहद मुश्किल लग रहा था। सीरीज जीतने के लिए अब भारत को 285 रनों के लक्ष्य का बचाव करने के लिए अच्छी गेंदबाजी करनी होगी। इस मैदान पर पहली पारी का औसत स्कोर 322 है, इसलिए फिलहाल न्यूजीलैंड की टीम बेहतर स्थिति में होगी, लेकिन उन्हें भी लक्ष्य का पीछा करते हुए केएल राहुल जैसी पारी खेलने वाले किसी खिलाड़ी की जरूरत होगी।
