After the Second World War, many of Germany's major cities, such as Berlin, Cologne, and Dresden, had been reduced to rubble. Most industries were at a standstill, and roads and bridges had been destroyed. People were struggling with hunger and unemployment. At the same time, the country had to move beyond its Nazi past and rebuild itself as a nation founded on democracy and new values.
