Initial assessments have linked the disaster to a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). A large number of people have reportedly died or gone missing. Scientists warn that rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melt across the Himalayas, increasing the number and size of glacial lakes. A study by IIT Ropar and the University of Technology Sydney found that the number of glacial lakes in Himachal Pradesh increased from 107 in 1990 to 669 by 2024. Several of these lakes are considered vulnerable to GLOFs. Such floods can occur when a natural dam holding a glacial lake breaks due to landslides, avalanches, heavy rainfall or rising water pressure. Experts say satellite monitoring, field surveys, radar and sensors can help identify dangerous lakes and detect changes in water levels or dam stability. Controlled drainage can also reduce the risk of sudden lake failure. The immediate threat to India from the Nepal flood is considered limited, but the Bhotekoshi-Sunkoshi-Kosi river system has raised concerns in Bihar.
