भारत के अंतरिम मुख्य कोच वीवीएस लक्ष्मण ने रविवार को कहा कि युवा बल्लेबाज वैभव सूर्यवंशी की खेल को समझने की क्षमता पिछले छह महीनों में ‘काफी बढ़ी’ है।
उन्होंने कहा कि 15 वर्षीय बल्लेबाज की बढ़ती परिपक्वता ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय करियर के शुरुआती दौर में दबाव की परिस्थितियों से निपटने में उसकी काफी मदद की है।
सूर्यवंशी ने जिम्बाब्वे दौरे पर अपने आलोचकों को करारा जवाब देते हुए शानदार प्रदर्शन किया। उन्होंने तीसरे और अंतिम टी20 अंतरराष्ट्रीय मैच में 35 रन की जीत के साथ भारत को 3-0 से श्रृंखला जिताने में अहम भूमिका निभाई।
इस प्रदर्शन के लिए उन्हें ‘प्लेयर ऑफ द मैच’ और ‘प्लेयर ऑफ द सीरीज’ दोनों पुरस्कार मिले।
मैच के बाद प्रेस कांफ्रेंस में लक्ष्मण ने कहा, ‘‘सबसे प्रभावित करने वाली बात यह है कि व्यक्ति के तौर पर वह जिस तरह विकसित हुआ है। पिछले छह महीनों में उसकी परिपक्वता, खेल की समझ और जागरूकता में जबरदस्त वृद्धि हुई है। यही वजह है कि वह कठिन परिस्थितियों को अच्छी तरह संभाल पा रहा है।’’
सूर्यवंशी ने तीन पारियों में 50.33 की औसत से 151 रन बनाए। श्रृंखला के अंतिम मैच में उनकी 81 रन की शानदार पारी भारत की जीत की नींव बनी।
यह प्रदर्शन इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ उनके निराशाजनक पदार्पण दौरे के बाद आया, जहां उन्होंने 13, 14 और 15 रन की पारियां खेलीं और पांचवें व अंतिम टी20 से बाहर कर दिए गए थे। उस श्रृंखला में भारत को 0-4 से हार का सामना करना पड़ा था।
मुख्य कोच गौतम गंभीर को व्यस्त अंतरराष्ट्रीय कार्यक्रम के बीच विश्राम दिए जाने के कारण इस दौरे पर भारतीय टीम की जिम्मेदारी संभाल रहे
लक्ष्मण ने कहा, ‘‘उसने (सूर्यवंशी) अंडर-19 विश्व कप खेला और चार-पांच महीने के भीतर आईपीएल में अपना दबदबा कायम कर लिया। हम जानते हैं कि आईपीएल का स्तर कितना कठिन होता है। भारत ही नहीं, दुनिया के सर्वश्रेष्ठ गेंदबाजों के खिलाफ जिस तरह उन्होंने खुद को निखारा और अंतरराष्ट्रीय क्रिकेटर के रूप में आगे बढ़े, उससे उनकी प्रतिभा और क्षमता का पता चलता है।’’
उन्होंने कहा कि सूर्यवंशी में खुद को लगातार बेहतर बनाने की ललक साफ दिखाई देती है।
लक्ष्मण ने कहा कि वह चोटिल होने के बावजूद मैदान पर बने रहकर टीम के लिए योगदान देना चाहता था।
उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘हमें यह भी याद रखना चाहिए कि वह अभी सिर्फ 15 साल का है और खेल के हर पहलू में खुद को बेहतर बनाना चाहता है। आज के मैच में भी वह क्षेत्ररक्षण के दौरान पूरी तरह सक्रिय था। चोट लगने के बाद भी वह मैदान पर रहना चाहता था, लेकिन हमारे फिजियो ने उसे बाहर आने के लिए कहा। इससे पता चलता है कि टीम के लिए हर संभव योगदान देने की उसमें कितनी इच्छा है।
