भारत के नए T20I उप-कप्तान तिलक वर्मा हाल के समय में उम्मीदों पर खरे नहीं उतर पाए हैं। उनके खराब स्ट्राइक रेट को लेकर फैंस के बीच लगातार चर्चा होती रही है और शायद इसी वजह से चयनकर्ताओं ने ज़िम्बाब्वे के खिलाफ होने वाली तीन मैचों की सीरीज़ के लिए रिंकू सिंह को टीम में वापस बुलाया है। हालांकि, तिलक स्ट्राइक रेट को लेकर हो रही आलोचना से परेशान नहीं हैं। उनका कहना है कि वे निजी आंकड़ों के पीछे भागने के बजाय टीम की ज़रूरतों के हिसाब से बल्लेबाज़ी करते हैं।
ज़िम्बाब्वे सीरीज़ से पहले, हैदराबाद के इस बल्लेबाज़ ने साफ़ किया कि वे पहली ही गेंद से आक्रामक खेल दिखाने में सक्षम हैं, लेकिन मैच की स्थिति और टीम की असल ज़रूरत के हिसाब से उनका खेलने का तरीका बदल जाता है। तिलक ने प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस में कहा कि मैं हालात के हिसाब से खेलता हूँ। इस खेल में आपको अलग-अलग नंबर पर बैटिंग करनी पड़ती है, और खासकर ऐसे हालात में यह आसान नहीं होता। साथ ही, मैं हमेशा कहता हूँ कि टीम को जिसकी ज़रूरत हो, मैं वही करता हूँ। अगर मुझे टीम के लिए रुककर खेलना पड़े, तो मैं रुककर खेलता हूँ। अगर मुझे हिट करना पड़े, तो मैं हिट करके खेलता हूँ।
उन्होंने अपने खेलने के इस तरीके के पीछे असली वजह बताते हुए कहा कि इस दौरे पर भारत का टॉप-ऑर्डर बार-बार लड़खड़ा रहा था। 23 साल के तिलक ने आगे कहा कि आयरलैंड से लेकर इंग्लैंड तक, कई मैचों में हमने पावरप्ले या शुरुआती 10 ओवरों में ही चार-पांच विकेट गंवा दिए थे। ऐसे हालात में मैदान पर उतरते ही तेज़ी से रन बनाने की कोशिश करना सही नहीं है। यह बात हमेशा मेरे दिमाग में रहती है। मुझे पता है कि मैं पहली गेंद पर भी हिट कर सकता हूँ, लेकिन मैं देश के लिए खेल रहा हूँ और इसके साथ ज़िम्मेदारियाँ भी आती हैं।
भारत की वर्ल्ड कप जीत के बाद BCCI ने T20I टीम में बदलाव किए और तिलक को श्रेयस अय्यर का डिप्टी बनाया। कागज़ पर भले ही इस भूमिका का महत्व सीमित हो, लेकिन तिलक का कहना है कि इस अतिरिक्त ज़िम्मेदारी से उनकी बल्लेबाज़ी के नज़रिए पर सचमुच असर पड़ता है। उन्होंने कहा कि सब कुछ इस बात पर निर्भर करता है कि उस समय टीम को क्या चाहिए। कभी-कभी मुझे आखिर तक बल्लेबाज़ी करनी पड़ती है, और कभी-कभी मैच की स्थिति के हिसाब से टीम की योजनाएँ बदल जाती हैं। उप-कप्तान के तौर पर, मैनेजमेंट सोच-समझकर मुझे कुछ ज़िम्मेदारियाँ सौंपता है, और मैं उन ज़िम्मेदारियों को पूरा करना चाहता हूँ।
