रविवार को लॉर्ड्स में इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ़ होने वाले तीसरे वनडे मैच में भारत के पूर्व क्रिकेटर रोहित शर्मा अपना आखिरी इंटरनेशनल मैच खेल सकते हैं। इंग्लैंड में चल रही मौजूदा सीरीज़ के बाद इस अनुभवी खिलाड़ी के चयनकर्ताओं की योजनाओं में बने रहने की संभावना कम है, क्योंकि टीम अगले साल होने वाले वनडे वर्ल्ड कप की तैयारी शुरू कर रही है। माना जा रहा है कि नेशनल सिलेक्शन कमिटी भविष्य पर नज़र रख रही है। कमिटी के चेयरमैन अजीत अगरकर, जो टूरिंग सेलेक्टर के तौर पर टीम के साथ हैं, अभी कार्डिफ़ में हैं। इस कदम से यशस्वी जायसवाल के लिए रास्ते खुलने की उम्मीद है; उन्होंने तीन पारियों में दो शतक लगाकर प्रभावित किया है और उन्हें 50-ओवर वाले फ़ॉर्मेट में लंबे समय के विकल्प के तौर पर देखा जा रहा है।
BCCI के एक सीनियर अधिकारी ने नाम न बताने की शर्त पर बताया कि नेशनल सेलेक्टर चाहते हैं कि यशस्वी जायसवाल, जिन्होंने तीन पारियों में दो शतक लगाए हैं, उन्हें और मौके मिलें। लगभग 20 मैच होने हैं और जायसवाल को वे 20 मैच खेलने का मौका मिलना चाहिए। कोई रोहित से रिटायर होने के लिए नहीं कह सकता, लेकिन यह साफ़ है कि सितंबर में वेस्ट इंडीज़ के ख़िलाफ़ घरेलू सीरीज़ के लिए सेलेक्टर आगे की ओर देखना चाहेंगे। रोहित के भविष्य के बारे में फ़ैसला उन्हें ही लेना है।
वन-डे क्रिकेट में रोहित के हालिया प्रदर्शन से उन्हें लंबे समय तक टीम में बनाए रखने के दावे को ज़्यादा मज़बूती नहीं मिली है। अपनी पिछली आठ वनडे पारियों में, इस ओपनर ने 30.1 की औसत और 88.6 के स्ट्राइक रेट से 241 रन बनाए हैं, जिसमें एक अर्धशतक भी शामिल है। जहां रोहित के भविष्य को लेकर अनिश्चितता बनी हुई है, वहीं विराट कोहली को टीम मैनेजमेंट का समर्थन मिल रहा है। माना जा रहा है कि हेड कोच और अगरकर इस बात पर सहमत हैं कि अपनी फ़ॉर्म और फ़िटनेस की वजह से कोहली का टीम में चुना जाना तय है।
माना जा रहा है कि चयनकर्ता वर्ल्ड कप से पहले जायसवाल को काफ़ी मौके देने को लेकर भी सजग हैं। इंग्लैंड सीरीज़ के बाद भी रोहित को टीम में बनाए रखने से टूर्नामेंट से पहले होने वाले सीमित वनडे मैचों में इस युवा खिलाड़ी के लिए ज़रूरी मैच का अनुभव हासिल करने के मौके काफ़ी कम हो जाएंगे। खास बात यह है कि टेस्ट से संन्यास लेने के दौरान सिलेक्शन कमिटी के साथ रोहित के रिश्तों पर भी सवाल उठे थे। सिलेक्शन कमिटी की सोच से वाकिफ सूत्रों के मुताबिक, वे इस बात के पक्ष में नहीं थे कि यह अनुभवी खिलाड़ी इंग्लैंड में खेले गए पांच टेस्ट मैचों में से सिर्फ दो में हिस्सा लेने के बाद ही संन्यास का फैसला ले। हालांकि, रोहित का पक्ष जानने वाले लोगों का कहना है कि उनका इरादा कभी भी सिर्फ दो मैच खेलने का नहीं था और उन्होंने पूरी सीरीज़ के लिए खुद को उपलब्ध रखा था।
