कप्तान शुभमन गिल ने सोमवार को कहा कि स्टार बल्लेबाज़ विराट कोहली और रोहित शर्मा भारत की वनडे टीम का अहम हिस्सा बने हुए हैं, क्योंकि 50-ओवर के फ़ॉर्मेट में इन दोनों अनुभवी खिलाड़ियों का अनुभव और कौशल बहुत ज़्यादा है। मंगलवार से बर्मिंघम में शुरू होने वाली इंग्लैंड के ख़िलाफ़ तीन मैचों की वनडे सीरीज़ में भारत की उम्मीदें कोहली और रोहित पर टिकी होंगी। इससे पहले हुई T20I सीरीज़ में भारत को आयरलैंड और इंग्लैंड से क्रमशः 0-2 और 0-4 से हार का सामना करना पड़ा था।

मैच से पहले प्रेस कॉन्फ़्रेंस में गिल ने कहा कि मुझे लगता है कि विराट भाई और रोहित भाई पिछले एक दशक से भारतीय बैटिंग लाइनअप की रीढ़ रहे हैं और वे हमारी टीम का बहुत अहम हिस्सा बने हुए हैं। उन्होंने आगे कहा कि टीम में उनका अनुभव और कौशल ज़ाहिर तौर पर बहुत कीमती है। हमने देखा है कि उन्होंने पिछले एक दशक में अलग-अलग हालात में, बार-बार, लगातार, कई मैचों, अलग-अलग टूर्नामेंट और अलग-अलग मौकों पर कैसा प्रदर्शन किया है।

इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ मंगलवार से शुरू होने वाली तीन मैचों की एकदिवसीय श्रृंखला से पहले गिल ने कहा कि मुझे नहीं लगता कि वनडे को 40 ओवर का बनाया जाना चाहिए।’’ गिल ने कहा, ‘‘पहले हम काफी त्रिकोणीय श्रृंखलाएं खेलते थे और उन्हें देखना बेहद मजेदार होता था। ऑस्ट्रेलिया में भारत, ऑस्ट्रेलिया और श्रीलंका जैसी टीमें खेलती थीं। आप केवल एक टीम के खिलाफ नहीं, बल्कि दो अलग-अलग टीमों के खिलाफ अलग-अलग मैदानों पर खेलते थे। उन्होंने कहा कि अगर वनडे क्रिकेट को और रोचक बनाना है तो द्विपक्षीय श्रृंखलाओं के बजाय त्रिकोणीय या शायद चतुष्कोणीय श्रृंखलाएं आयोजित की जानी चाहिए। इससे खिलाड़ियों और दर्शकों, दोनों के लिए यह प्रारूप ज्यादा दिलचस्प बनेगा।

इस 26 साल के खिलाड़ी ने कहा कि उनके लिए 50 ओवर का विश्व कप अब भी क्रिकेट की सबसे प्रतिष्ठित प्रतियोगिता है। उन्होंने कहा कि मैंने बचपन में सबसे ज्यादा 50 ओवर का क्रिकेट देखा है। जब भी विश्व कप का नाम आता है तो सबसे पहले 50 ओवर के विश्व कप की याद आती है।मुझे किसी एक विश्व कप को जीतना हो तो वह 50 ओवर का विश्व कप ही होगा। गिल ने कहा कि इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ मौजूदा वनडे श्रृंखला 2027 में दक्षिण अफ्रीका में होने वाले विश्व कप की तैयारियों के लिहाज से बेहद महत्वपूर्ण है।
