भारत की टेस्ट और वनडे टीम के कप्तान शुभमन गिल का कहना है कि उन्हें टेनिस स्टार कार्लोस अल्काराज के खेल में अपनी बल्लेबाजी की झलक दिखाई देती है और उन्होंने स्पेनिश खिलाड़ी के ‘ड्रॉप शॉट’ की तुलना अपने खास ‘शॉर्ट-आर्म’ शॉट से की।
गिल ने शुक्रवार को विम्बलडन के पुरुष एकल सेमीफाइनल मुकाबले देखने पहुंचे। उन्होंने महान टेनिस खिलाड़ी रोजर फेडरर की प्रशंसा की। उन्होंने खेल के उन दिग्गजों के नाम बताए जिन्हें वह अपने ‘ड्रीम डिनर’ में आमंत्रित करना चाहेंगे।
आधुनिक टेनिस में अल्काराज का ड्रॉप शॉट सबसे प्रभावी रणनीतिक हथियारों में से एक माना जाता है जबकि गिल शॉर्ट-पिच गेंदों पर अक्सर ‘शॉर्ट-आर्म’ (पूरी बाजू के बजाय कोहनी को थोड़ा मोड़कर खेलना) शॉट खेलते हैं।
गिल ने ‘जियोस्टार’ से कहा, ‘‘अल्काराज का ड्रॉप शॉट मुझे क्रिकेट के ‘शॉर्ट-आर्म जैब’ की याद दिलाता है। मैं भी यह शॉट खेलता हूं और यह मेरा खास शॉट है। यह धोखा देने वाला और बेहद प्रभावी है। ’’
उन्होंने अपने ‘ड्रीम डिनर’ मेहमानों के बारे में सेरेना विलियम्स, फेडरर, क्रिकेट के महान बल्लेबाज सचिन तेंदुलकर और वेस्टइंडीज के दिग्गज सर विवियन रिचर्ड्स का नाम लिया।
उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘सेरेना विलियम्स, रोजर फेडरर और फिर क्रिकेटरों में सर विवियन रिचर्ड्स और सचिन सर। ये चार दिग्गज हैं जिनके साथ मैं बैठकर डिनर करना चाहूंगा। ’’
गिल ने कहा, ‘‘मुझे लगता है कि उनके साथ होने वाली बातचीत शानदार होगी। इन सभी ने अपने-अपने दौर में खेल पर दबदबा बनाया है और वे अपनी यात्रा से जुड़ा बहुत कुछ साझा कर सकते हैं। वह मेरे लिए एक ‘ड्रीम डिनर’ होगा। ’’
भारतीय कप्तान ने इस बार विम्बलडन का खिताब जीतने के लिए यानिक सिनर का समर्थन किया।
उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘मैंविम्बलडन जीतने के लिए सिनर का समर्थन कर रहा हूं।
वह शानदार खिलाड़ी हैं और कोर्ट के अंदर और बाहर खुद को बेहतरीन तरीके से पेश करते हैं। ’’
गिल ने फेडरर को अपना पसंदीदा टेनिस खिलाड़ी बताते हुए कहा, ‘‘रोजर फेडरर मेरे पसंदीदा खिलाड़ी हैं। बचपन में लोग कहते थे कि वह सब कुछ बेहद सहजता से कर लेते हैं। लेकिन जब आप खुद कोई खेल खेलते हैं, तब समझ में आता है कि किसी चीज को इतना सहज दिखाने के पीछे कितनी मेहनत होती है। ’’
उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘क्रिकेट में भी लोगों ने मेरे बारे में कहा है कि मैं सहज खेलता हूं, लेकिन मुझे पता है कि इसके पीछे कितनी मेहनत है। फेडरर जिस खूबसूरती और गरिमा के साथ खेलते थे, वह बेहद खास थी और यही वजह है कि मैं उनके खेल का मुरीद हूं। ’’
जब गिल से पूछा गया कि वह टेनिस युगल मुकाबले में किस खिलाड़ी के साथ जोड़ी बनाना चाहेंगे, तो उन्होंने कार्लोस अल्काराज का नाम लिया।
उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘वह ऐसे खिलाड़ी लगते हैं जो कोर्ट पर खेल का भरपूर आनंद लेते हैं। उनके साथ खेलना मजेदार होगा। मुझे टेनिस की बारीकियों का ज्यादा पता नहीं है, लेकिन मुझे लगता है कि मैं अपना योगदान दे सकता हूं, इसलिए यह मुकाबला काफी रोचक होगा।
