The political debate over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy has now taken a sharp turn, with Rahul Gandhi’s remarks, Sandeep Dikshit’s reference to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s controversial response becoming the centre of attention. What began as a debate over foreign policy and Modi’s diplomatic style has now shifted towards personal remarks, character attacks and offensive political language. The controversy has even reached Italy, with the Italian Embassy expressing disapproval over remarks concerning Giorgia Meloni. But the bigger question is — when did political criticism stop being about policies and start becoming about personal attacks? If Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of PM Modi’s foreign policy is wrong, it should be countered with facts and arguments. And if Nishikant Dubey’s response crosses the line, political disagreement should not become an excuse for personal or character-based attacks. This is not simply a Congress vs BJP issue. It raises a much bigger question about the declining standards of political discourse in India.
