भारत के पूर्व अंडर-19 बल्लेबाज़ मनजोत कालरा, जो अब लंका प्रीमियर लीग (LPL) की टीम 'जाफ़ना किंग्स' के सह-मालिक हैं, को शुक्रवार को श्रीलंका के स्पोर्ट्स एंटी-करप्शन इन्वेस्टिगेटर्स ने एक खिलाड़ी को रिश्वत देने की कोशिश के आरोप में गिरफ़्तार किया। यह गिरफ़्तारी लंका प्रीमियर लीग के छठे सीज़न के शुरू होने से कुछ घंटे पहले ही की गई। कालरा को 'खेल से जुड़े अपराधों की रोकथाम के लिए पुलिस की स्पेशल इन्वेस्टिगेशन यूनिट' ने हिरासत में लिया और बाद में मजिस्ट्रेट के सामने पेश किया।
27 साल के कालरा तब चर्चा में आए जब उन्होंने 2018 ICC अंडर-19 क्रिकेट वर्ल्ड कप के फ़ाइनल में ऑस्ट्रेलिया के ख़िलाफ़ भारत की जीत में शतक लगाया। इस साल की शुरुआत में, उन्होंने जाफ़ना किंग्स फ़्रैंचाइज़ी में निवेश करके स्पोर्ट्स ओनरशिप की दुनिया में कदम रखा। श्रीलंकाई पुलिस का आरोप है कि कालरा ने चल रहे टूर्नामेंट के सिलसिले में एक खिलाड़ी को पैसे की पेशकश करने की कोशिश की थी। जांचकर्ताओं के मुताबिक, यह संपर्क टूर्नामेंट शुरू होने से करीब 10 दिन पहले किया गया था। खिलाड़ी ने इस मामले की जानकारी अधिकारियों को दी, जिसके बाद जांच शुरू हुई और शुक्रवार को उनकी गिरफ़्तारी हुई।
पुलिस ने बताया कि यह शिकायत श्रीलंकाई क्रिकेटर भानुका राजपक्षे, अविष्का फर्नांडो और डुनिथ वेलालेज ने दर्ज कराई है, जो सभी जाफना किंग्स टीम का हिस्सा हैं। यह घटनाक्रम 2026 LPL के पहले दिन हुआ, जब कोलंबो के SSC ग्राउंड्स पर जाफना किंग्स का मुकाबला गॉल गैलेंट्स से होना था। पांच टीमों वाले इस टूर्नामेंट में कुल 24 मैच खेले जाएंगे और यह 8 अगस्त तक चलेगा।
इससे पहले भी LPL पर मैच-फिक्सिंग, रिश्वतखोरी और भ्रष्टाचार के आरोप लग चुके हैं। इस साल की शुरुआत में, एक दूसरी फ्रेंचाइजी के मालिक को श्रीलंका के भ्रष्टाचार-रोधी कानूनों का उल्लंघन करते हुए एक खिलाड़ी को प्रभावित करने और सट्टेबाजी की गतिविधियों को आयोजित करने की कोशिश करने की बात कबूलने के बाद चार साल की सस्पेंडेड जेल की सज़ा सुनाई गई थी। कोर्ट ने उन पर 24 मिलियन श्रीलंकाई रुपये का जुर्माना भी लगाया था।
