कपिल देव को वैभव सूर्यवंशी के अनोखे टैलेंट पर कोई शक नहीं है, लेकिन साथ ही, भारत को पहली बार वर्ल्ड कप जिताने वाले कप्तान ने जल्दबाजी न करने और धैर्य रखने की सलाह भी दी है। कपिल ने सूर्यवंशी की जमकर तारीफ की और उनकी तुलना भारतीय क्रिकेट के कुछ महान खिलाड़ियों से की। हालांकि, वह यह भी नहीं भूले हैं कि यह युवा खिलाड़ी अभी सिर्फ़ 15 साल का है और उसका पूरा जीवन और करियर अभी उसके सामने है।
'स्पोर्ट्स तक' से बात करते हुए कपिल ने माना कि उन्होंने 'सूर्यवंशी' की बस कुछ झलकियाँ ही देखी थीं, लेकिन उन्हें उस युवा खिलाड़ी की ज़बरदस्त क्षमता पर पूरा भरोसा था। कपिल ने कहा कि मैंने उसे ज़्यादा नहीं देखा है, बस थोड़ा-बहुत ही देखा है। जितना भी मैंने देखा है, उससे साफ़ है कि वह बहुत प्रतिभाशाली है, इसमें कोई शक नहीं। लेकिन मुझे लगता है कि अभी लोग उसके बारे में बहुत ज़्यादा बातें कर रहे हैं। उसे थोड़ा समय दें। उसे इतना ज़्यादा बढ़ा-चढ़ाकर न दिखाएं। इतनी कम उम्र में, शायद वह खुद को पूरी तरह समझ भी नहीं पाया होगा या उसे यह एहसास भी नहीं होगा कि वह क्या कर सकता है।
सूर्यवंशी की स्वाभाविक प्रतिभा की तुलना तेंदुलकर और कोहली से करते हुए, कपिल ने ज़ोर दिया कि इस युवा खिलाड़ी की असली परीक्षा T20 क्रिकेट के बाहर होगी, जहाँ लंबे समय तक स्वभाव और तकनीक की परख होती है। कपिल ने कहा कि लेकिन अगर आप सिर्फ़ टैलेंट की बात करें, तो हाँ, वह सचिन और विराट कोहली जितने ही अच्छे हैं। उनमें ऐसा ही टैलेंट दिखता है, लेकिन T20 क्रिकेट में। दूसरे फ़ॉर्मेट में उन्हें अभी खुद को साबित करना बाकी है। जिस दिन वह टेस्ट क्रिकेट खेलेंगे, क्या वह पाँच ओवर मेडन खेलने के बाद भी बैटिंग कर पाएँगे? सवाल यही है।
भारत के पूर्व कप्तान ने फिर से कहा कि सिर्फ़ सबसे छोटे फ़ॉर्मेट में मिली सफलता किसी खिलाड़ी के करियर को तय नहीं कर सकती और रेड-बॉल क्रिकेट के हिसाब से ढलने के लिए अलग तरह की सोच की ज़रूरत होती है। इस युवा खिलाड़ी का IPL 2025 का सीज़न यादगार रहा; उन्होंने सात मैचों में 36 की औसत और 206 से ज़्यादा के स्ट्राइक रेट से 252 रन बनाए। उन्होंने IPL 2026 में भी अपना शानदार फ़ॉर्म जारी रखा और टूर्नामेंट में सबसे ज़्यादा रन बनाकर 'ऑरेंज कैप' जीती। उनके बेहतरीन प्रदर्शन की वजह से उन्हें आयरलैंड और इंग्लैंड के ख़िलाफ़ T20I सीरीज़ के लिए पहली बार भारतीय टीम में चुना गया।
